How to tell the difference between English Shepherds and Welsh Sheepdogs?
There is a lady that lives near me and I’m showing her Border Collie from her. She breeds Welsh Sheepdogs, too. The first time I saw her dogs I was at a Flyball demo and I thought they were just sable and tri color Border Collies from showlines (That’s how pretty those dogs are!). I honestly could not tell the difference between Welshies and BCs until I saw her dogs working sheep. Welshies aren’t as intense as BCs and theu herd with their tail curled over their back, other than that, they do look like a BC.
But, I was looking at English Shepherds and to me they look EXACTLY like a Welshie. I’ve never seen an English Shepherd in person, only in pics, but they still look very much the same. Is there a difference look wise? A difference in the way they work or their personality?

English shepherds, to me, tend to have a boxier, more squared face, than the general triangular appearance of the border. I’ve never met a Welsh sheepdog, but their photographs tend to range from looking like border collie mixes to collie mixes to Aussie mixes. The English tend to be a hodgepodge of conformation and coloration too, but I see more similarities and a ‘look’ than I see in the Welsh.
I don’t imagine there would be a substantial difference between the Welsh and the English. Same original lines from the looks of it, one developed further south than the other. I imagine they’re very similar in drive and temperament.
How lucky that you got to meet some authentic sheepdogs like that!
